Hey, why buy corporate, politically aligned, or cowardly donuts when you can make your own? Why not take these two weeks and perfect a recipe...
I'm starting with one that I found on
Secret Donut Recipe. The interesting thing that stands out about it is the inclusion of "1/2 cup of warm mashed potatoes".
Fairly simple, and I had to admit it was the potato that got me. And I'll admit I was totally guessing on heating oil. It woulda' been easier if I'd had an electric skillet.
Anyway, they fry up like a chewie piece of fried bread. Not very donut-like, but pretty tasty. Made the vanilla and chocolate glaze. Very simple, though I used less sugar (about 1/8 c less) and twice the vanilla for the vanilla glaze.
With glaze ... TOTALLY DIFFERENT! Very good.
Goals for the next batch:
Get the oil temp right (just break down and buy the electric skillet!), a thicker glaze that will run less, and "flatter" donuts that will hold the glaze better (get a real donut cutter and make smaller "holes").
